Sustainability for Seychelles

Climate Change Projects

Seychelles is highly vulnerable to climate change, facing many challenges as a result.

These include rising sea levels, coastal erosion, rising temperatures, and many other negative impacts.S4S has played a vital role in implementing different climate change projects ranging from climate education to artistic initiatives.

Climate Change Education

With support of GCCA funding granted in 2016, by the Ministry of Environment, Energy, and Climate Change, S4S carried out a program to promote climate change awareness and action in Seychelles.

S4S also wrote three curriculum guides for teachers based on agriculture, construction, and tourism. The guides are designed to draw attention to the industry and climate change.

S4S also implemented another project offering workshops to post-secondary schools, community outreach activities and other initiatives. This EU funded project aimed to increase awareness of the risks of climate change and actions everyone can take to be part of the solution.

Artist Workshop

S4S worked with Seychellois artists to prepare an exhibition and poetry night at the Alliance Francaise, coinciding with the Paris global climate talks.

Ride for the Planet

The Global Day of Action for Climate Change, coordinated by AVAAZ and 350.org urged leaders to take stronger climate action. In Seychelles, S4S organized two events on September 2014: an 80km cycling race on Mahe with the Seychelles Cycling Association to promote biking as a sustainable alternative, and a Praslin dive with Octopus Divers and the Praslin Environment Group to highlight the impacts of climate change on coral reefs.

Climate Change Workshop

In 2009, S4S, with funding from LUNGOS, the National Climate Change Committee, and other partners, organized climate change workshops for students and professionals. Participants included teachers, tourism and agriculture students, entrepreneurs, fishermen, farmers, construction trainees, journalists and Members of the National Assembly.

Climate Change March

S4S participated in the global climate march on November 2015, an international event coordinated by 350.org and AVAAZ on the eve of the opening of the Paris Climate Summit.
