Sustainability Projects
Sustainability related projects
S4S implements many projects designed to protect the environment, encourage sustainable living and create positive change. These projects range from communications and promotional campaigns to energy efficiency and sustainable tourism.
Manz Manze Lokal
The development of the ‘Manz Manze Lokal’ communication and promotional campaign was a project implemented by S4S in 2017. This initiative was delivered on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries through the CLISSA project. S4S aimed to raise awareness on the benefits of buying and consuming local agricultural and fisheries products.

Greening the Prisons
S4S has partnered with various institutions to implement its initiatives. In 2014, with the support of the Australian Direct Aid program (DAP), one such project was carried out to “Green the Prisons”.
The project was implemented at the Montagne Posee Prison with the objective of making the facility more sustainable by reducing its carbon footprint through improved electricity and treated water consumption. The Seychelles Energy Commission (SEC) played a key role in the project by conducting an energy audit to identify ways of reducing the electricity consumption of the prison. The audit recommended the use of energy efficient security lighting. S4S also collaborated with several other NGOs to support the prison facility’s transition toward sustainability.
Project funding was used to deliver a range of different activities including green training workshops for inmates and the purchase of equipment. Funding was secured from the Liaison Unit of Non-Governmental Organizations of Seychelles (LUNGOS) to the Environment and Natural Resources Commission. These resources supported training and rehabilitation sessions for inmates, focusing on carpentry, rainwater plumbing, sustainable agriculture, arts and crafts, and habitat restoration.
Sustainable Homes
S4S has worked in collaboration with partners such as the Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) and the SEC on a pilot project to study the socio-economic impacts of sustainable living.
This project involved helping three economically vulnerable families adopt eco-friendly practices at home, improve their quality of life and save money. The project, funded by LUNGOS, forms part of the economic reform social program of the Government of Seychelles.
The first phase of the project began with a water and energy audit of the three homes of the families willing to adopt eco-friendly practices at home. A meeting was held with each family to discuss their current practices and identify areas of improvement. The second stage focused on the installation of new equipment, such as solar water heaters, energy efficient appliances, rainwater harvesting systems and setting up or improving their home garden.
The homes were monitored by S4S to gauge whether there was a reduction in energy and water bills. The families were also engaged to ascertain their views on whether adopting sustainable living practices had improved their quality of life. A media program accompanied the project to encourage more families to adopt sustainable living practices. S4S also produced a poster promoting sustainable living, funded by the National Climate Change Committee (NCCC). This project offered great insight into the benefits and challenges of sustainable living in Seychelles.

Sustainable Tourism
Sustainable tourism seeks to take full account of the current and future economic, social, and environmental impacts of tourism activities and balancing the needs of visitors, communities, and the environment. In addressing this concept, S4S has partnered with tourism establishments to encourage and promote sustainable tourism.
S4S partnered with the Four Seasons Hotel, for instance, to support its efforts to becoming greener and more sustainable. The project focused on wetland restoration, education and awareness, and sustainable waste management.
Another project with Ephelia Hotel, “Improving Biodiversity Management”, focused on developing environmental education and awareness materials for staff and clients and establishing closer ties with the local community and other stakeholders. As part of the project, a mangrove management plan was developed, an initiative particularly fitting a Ephelis is home to a designated Ramsar Site.
In further efforts of promoting sustainable tourism, S4S in collaboration with Air Seychelles, the Seychelle Tourism Board (STB), Constance Ephelia Resort and GreenHut Productions produced a video on how to be an eco-tourist. Since the beginning of July 2010, Air Seychelles has aired this short five-minute in-flight video. Available in English and French, the video offers visitors tips on how to reduce energy and water use as well as waste while on holiday. The video also offers advice on things to do, buy, and see which will contribute to environmental, economic and social responsibility in Seychelles. The project was funded by the National Climate Change Committee with the United Nations Development Programme/Project Coordinating Unit (UNDP/PCU).
